Law and Order: Legal Gender Recognition and its Discontents

This paper is based on interviews with trans individuals and legal professionals who have attempted legal gender recognition processes in Lebanon. The research explores trans individuals’ lived experiences in accessing legal recognition; the legal institutions, actors, and regulations that they encounter; and the conditions imposed by the law on trans people seeking to change the gender marker on their ID. This paper is part of the broader research project titled “Between the Clinic and the Courthouse: Trans experiences with bodily autonomy in Lebanon”, which was conducted by Qorras in 2024 and which focused on the legal and medical aspects of gender affirmation in Lebanon.

The Trade-Off: Reading Bodily Autonomy, Civic Rights and The Medical System Through Trans Experiences

This paper is based on interviews with trans individuals who have attempted to access gender-affirming care in Lebanon, and with medical professionals interacting with trans individuals in their profession. The research explores trans individuals’ lived experiences accessing gender-affirming medical care; the medical institutions, actors, and regulations that they encounter; the overlap between the legal and medical aspects of trans individuals’ experiences; and how healthcare providers understand their roles and responsibilities in relation to gender-affirming care. This paper is part of the broader research project titled “Between the Clinic and the Courthouse: Trans experiences with bodily autonomy in Lebanon”, which was conducted by Qorras in 2024 and which focused on the legal and medical aspects of gender affirmation in Lebanon.

Medical and Legal Methodology Document

This report documents the methodology designed and implemented in the context of Qorras’ research project “Between the Clinic and the Courthouse: Trans experiences with bodily autonomy in Lebanon” (2024). It situates the research within the broader working conditions under which it was carried out, and it presents the research design, tools, methods, and considerations that shaped it. By laying out these practical aspects and their political motivations, we aim for this document to grant a better understanding of the research, its findings, and their implications, and to make these processes accessible for others to borrow and build on.

Trans Individuals and Mental Health in Lebanon: Understanding Barriers and Biases in Care

This research paper presents the barriers and challenges that trans people face when accessing mental health services in Lebanon whether due to the insufficient availability or the insufficient quality of the services provided. This research bases itself on semi structured interviews with trans people and mental health professionals who shared their lived experiences with Qorras’s research team. It explores the complexities of trans individuals’ journeys with mental health in Lebanon amidst widespread stigma and multi-layered oppression.

Ways Forward in the relationship between the trans community and Civil Soceity - Version 1

Tajassod

In 2022, Tajassod launched the first trans-led research on “accessibility to community, mental health and legal services in Lebanon”. This increased Tajassod’s engagement with aid and humanitarian agencies and community organizations. The research highlighted the interest of such agencies and organisations in trans issues and their desire for trans presence in their spaces and on their platforms. On the other hand, it underlined evident gaps in their work and their perception of trans individuals, and vice versa
